Why Do Roaches Enter Homes?

Feb 22, 2023

The cockroach is among the most common indoor pests. These critters often find their way into homes through small openings around doors, windows, and plumbing pipes, and once they enter, they may cause a variety of issues for your household. Here's what attracts roaches to residences and how to prevent them.

3 Sources Cockroaches Look for In Homes

1. Food Debris

Cockroaches are omnivorous and opportunistic feeders, meaning they will consume most foods found inside the home. This includes everything from dried grains and cereals to produce, meats, and pet kibble. You can deter them from infesting your kitchen, cabinets, and pantries by keeping all dry foods in durable, tightly-sealed plastic containers.

Additionally, wipe down countertops after preparing snacks and meals to remove crumbs and juices that might draw roaches into the area. It's also a good idea to sweep floors daily, mop once per week, and wash cooktop surfaces every one to two weeks. Since cockroaches may also become attracted to putrefying foods in trash bins, take out the garbage at the end of each day, and make sure outdoor bins have tight-sealing lids.

2. Water

Though a cockroach may go several days without food, it cannot survive without a regular source of water. As a result, these pests frequently enter homes in search of moisture, which is why you might notice them in kitchen, bathroom, and laundry areas. One of the best ways to keep these critters out of your space is by repairing plumbing leaks and clogs as soon as you notice them. Additionally, blot or mop up spills immediately, and if your indoor air is humid, use portable dehumidifiers to keep your home dry and deter these pests.

3. Warmth

Cockroaches thrive in hot and humid conditions, which is why they are most active during summer. However, as outdoor temperatures become cooler, they typically seek refuge in warm indoor areas. Professional exterminators suggest keeping them out by sealing small gaps and cracks around doors, windows, and plumbing fixtures with caulk or weatherstripping. Doing this during fall may ensure these insects stay out of your space throughout the cold season.
