3 Things to Know About Wasps in New York

Feb 23, 2023

Wasps are difficult pests to live around. They can be both antagonistic and abundant, which can make them very hard to avoid. To find out how to fend them off and when to call pest control, review the guide below to understand how wasps work.

Important Facts You Should Remember About Wasps

1. The Difference Between Bees and Wasps

If you’ve noticed more flying pests around your home, it’s important to identify which type of pest it might be. This information will help you know how to avoid them, and will help pest control know how to deal with them.

For example, bees appear large, hairy and fuzzy, while wasps are much slimmer, shinier, and are often a brighter shade of yellow. Also, wasps and bees both have stingers that inject venom, causing swelling and inflammation. However, certain bees, like honeybees, die after their first sting, meaning they won’t attack unless provoked. However, wasps are known to be more aggressive and can sting multiple times without causing injury to themselves.

2. Where They Build Nests

Unlike a bees’ nest, which is made of wax and resembles honeycombs, a wasps’ nest will look like a swirling hive made of gray paper or clay. Wasps generally build nests in outlying enclaves: attics, awnings, voids in building walls, bushes, mailboxes, decks, and even tree logs are all ideal spots.

They will usually stay outside where it’s warm and dry, but if it gets cold and rainy, they may try to find shelter in tight openings around your home. If they discover that your home is a source of food, they will begin to build their nests near you. Before calling pest control, it’s important to make sure any opening in your home is secure, and that you’re never leaving any unsealed food or garbage lying around.

3. How to Avoid Being Stung

To keep wasps from coming near you or your family, take special precautions that will keep them at bay. For example, wasps are attracted to certain scents, so don’t wear perfumes and switch to odorless hair products. If a wasp is near you, don’t make any sudden movements. Moving slowly will keep them from getting irritated.

Your skin is more protected when you wear heavier layers, but because many stingers can penetrate clothes, and wearing heavy clothes is uncomfortable in warmer seasons, you should only dress in layers when you’re around a hive, rather than all the time. And because wasps are attracted to colors and patterns, wear white clothes to avoid looking too interesting.
