5 Common Cockroach Species

Feb 23, 2023

If you think you’ve found a cockroach in your home, you may be wondering how to tell if it actually is one or what species it is. Depending on where you found it and how it behaves, you may easily be able to tell one from another. Knowing these factors can give you some insight into keeping them from living in your home.

A Guide to Common Cockroach Species

1. American

Also called the “palmetto bug,” the American cockroach is the largest in North America. They are about 2 inches long when fully grown, with reddish-brown bodies and a band of yellow on the back of their head. Both females and males are capable of making short flights. They are usually found in the sewers or on the lower floors of apartment buildings and homes wherever uncovered food may be found.

2. Brown-Banded

The brown-banded cockroach is one of the smallest types found in homes. They’re so small you may not even realize it’s a cockroach if it’s not yet an adult. They tend to live in higher spaces, such as in closets, and keep to themselves. They may even jump if you surprise or touch them. The female’s wings will be reddish-brown to dark brown, whereas the male’s wings are lighter at the tips and enable them to fly.

3. German

German cockroaches are among the most common types you will find inside homes. They are light brown and have two vertical dark brown stripes behind their heads. They can often be found in sinks or around other water sources in the kitchen or bathroom and are the most likely to form a large infestation in the home.

4. Oriental

The giant, dark brown Oriental cockroach is usually found in the basement, especially after heavy rainstorms when they find their way inside the home through gaps and holes in walls. They generally prefer the cooler temperatures of dark spaces. You probably won’t see them flying since the females have no wings and the males are too short to sustain flight.

5. Smoky Brown

While the Smoky Brown cockroach is similar in size to the American, their bodies are almost black in color and have a more matte finish. If you find one in your home, chances are you brought it in since they don’t like to live in houses. Check your firewood before bringing it in during the winter, so you don’t transplant these pests inside.
