4 Common Entry Points for Mice

Feb 22, 2023

Finding a mouse in your house isn't generally a pleasant experience. And usually, when you see one mouse, it means there are many more hiding throughout your home. As the weather gets colder, mice are looking for warm and dry places to spend the winter. They are looking for entry points into your home, and if any of the following spots are left open or vulnerable, you might be calling for mouse removal soon. While you tackle fall chores, check the following common spots where mice often get in, and make sure they are secured.

How Mice Get Into Homes

1. Dryer Vents

It's very common for mice to scurry into a home via the outdoor dryer vent. Vents are fitted with flaps designed to keep pests out, but if the flap fails, it's very easy for a mouse to slip in. Dryer vents are actually very appealing to mice because they are usually warm. If you find evidence of their presence in the laundry room, check the vent flap and tubes for damage and have them repaired. Otherwise, any mouse removal efforts will be temporary, since they'll just find their way back in.

2. HVAC Units

HVAC units are another common entry point for pests. Mice can crawl into the outdoor compressor unit, where they can not only wreak havoc on wires and lines with their chewing but can also find their way into the ductwork indoors. You might even be able to hear mice in the ducts or notice unpleasant odors coming from the vents. Mice can easily escape the vents too, into other parts of your home. Taking care of mouse removal at the first sign of an infestation is important to prevent costly damage and possible health risks to your family.

3. Garages

Garages are a favorite nesting spot for mice, since they are usually warm and dry and often have plenty of food in the form of bird seed, grass seed, and pet food. Garages are also typically dark and don't have a lot of human traffic, so mice feel safe. Once inside the garage, it's easy for a mouse to get inside your home, so take care to keep the door closed when not in use, and to make sure all of the windows and doors are fully sealed.

4. Windows and Thresholds

Mice have very unique bodies that allow them to squeeze through tiny openings — an adult mouse can get through a hole as small as a dime. Any gaps around windows or at the bottom of doors can allow rodents inside, as well as other pests. To prevent an infestation that requires professional mouse removal and high energy bills, check the seals and make repairs before the winter.
